This is a great overview of Greek myths and legends， telling the stories in a brief but easy-to-read manner。 It also includes many pictures of statues and intricate designs， which helped me to create a picture of what was happening。 It is organised into seven sections: In The Beginning; The Olympians; Of Heroes， Gods and Men; Minos and Theseus; Thebes and Mycenae; Heracles; and the Argonauts and Medea。 The contents at the front make it easy to select a particular myth， and it has an index at the This is a great overview of Greek myths and legends， telling the stories in a brief but easy-to-read manner。 It also includes many pictures of statues and intricate designs， which helped me to create a picture of what was happening。 It is organised into seven sections: In The Beginning; The Olympians; Of Heroes， Gods and Men; Minos and Theseus; Thebes and Mycenae; Heracles; and the Argonauts and Medea。 The contents at the front make it easy to select a particular myth， and it has an index at the back that tells you where different people are included int he stories。 However， I would prefer it if in this index it would say a bit about who these people were - I think it would really help my understanding of who everyone is。 I would also appreciate some kind of family tree or diagram showing everyone's connections - as the amount of children the Gods have is extremely confusing！This book has also changed my opinions on most of the Greek Gods and Heroes， as it has gone further in depth of the horrible things that were accepted in that society。 It clearly shows the excess of rape， adultery and murder that I hadn't read much about in other books of Greek Myths， some of which only look at the Gods as being brilliant， and having done nothing wrong。 。。。more

I obtained this edition for a class which begins on the 13th of October and decided to read it through， prior to class beginning。 This is specifically an art class and while there is art pictured within， and this is labeled as an illustrated edition， I find myself quite disappointed with the underwhelming amount of illustration included。 A missed opportunity in this book， illustrated maps to help you picture where the mythologies take place， would have been an excellent addition。 Maps that featu I obtained this edition for a class which begins on the 13th of October and decided to read it through， prior to class beginning。 This is specifically an art class and while there is art pictured within， and this is labeled as an illustrated edition， I find myself quite disappointed with the underwhelming amount of illustration included。 A missed opportunity in this book， illustrated maps to help you picture where the mythologies take place， would have been an excellent addition。 Maps that feature both the fictional locations of the mythologies， but also the actual earthbound locations the events of the mythologies take place， what they might now be called， and the people that now live in those areas。 （A family tree also would have been most excellent。）The stories were great to read， many I already knew， but not in this format or particular telling。 Perhaps once I have an understanding of the class direction and how this type of book will fit into it， my review rating will be higher。 But as it stands now， I have much more impressive books with regards to both art and mythology already on my bookshelves。 。。。more

Really liked this collection of Greek Myths compiled by Robert Graves， I preferred Mythos to this slightly as Mythos was more， fun？ This is great for incredibly detailed understanding of Greek Mythology but lacked a bit of fun factor to be read for entertainment。 Definitely enjoyed as a learning tool

I read this book along side and after reading Ariadne to remind me of the myths so I could see how accurate Ariadne was。 I was happy to find that it was very accurate， but unfortunately I did not enjoy this book as much as the fictional Ariadne。It has everything you'd want inside， all the Greek myths， their sources and their alternatives。 However， I did not enjoy the writing style。 It seems to be written purposefully in a complicated fashion that doesn't bring the myths to life at all。I would sa I read this book along side and after reading Ariadne to remind me of the myths so I could see how accurate Ariadne was。 I was happy to find that it was very accurate， but unfortunately I did not enjoy this book as much as the fictional Ariadne。It has everything you'd want inside， all the Greek myths， their sources and their alternatives。 However， I did not enjoy the writing style。 It seems to be written purposefully in a complicated fashion that doesn't bring the myths to life at all。I would say this book is good for reference and the study of Greek mythology， but if you'd like to enjoy reading about the myths， I'd avoid this one。 。。。more

Una investigación excelente， profunda y exhaustiva de la mitología griega， no solo es la mitología en si， es una investigación de las raíces y la epistemología de esta misma; Robert Graves va explicando paso a paso el cómo se fue construyendo este espectacular universo de Dioses semidioses， reyes y reinas， héroes etc y cómo está relacionada con un enorme número de culturas antiguas。

I picked the shorter illustrated edition， so this review might not apply to the more comprehensive version， which I only now saw available。 I'm a huge fan of Greek mythology and really enjoyed Nikolay Kun's compilation many years ago。 So， I decided to revisit the myths but presented by another author。 I saw that Robert Graves had done a book on them and since I loved his Claudius novels， I thought that in no way could I go wrong with this choice。 But I was wrong。 The narrative was so dry， so mes I picked the shorter illustrated edition， so this review might not apply to the more comprehensive version， which I only now saw available。 I'm a huge fan of Greek mythology and really enjoyed Nikolay Kun's compilation many years ago。 So， I decided to revisit the myths but presented by another author。 I saw that Robert Graves had done a book on them and since I loved his Claudius novels， I thought that in no way could I go wrong with this choice。 But I was wrong。 The narrative was so dry， so messed up， and without the smooth flow I remember from Kun's book。 It took a lot of effort to finish this otherwise really short by my standards work。 Definitely do not recommend this particular edition。 As I mentioned at the start， the two-volume edition might offer something better。 Unfortunately， after my bad experience with this one， I have absolutely no desire to give the longer version a try。 。。。more
